Why Was UAE Chosen For IPL 2020 To Be Held?

Dates have been confirmed for the upcoming IPL 2020 in UAE. Now that matches are turned to the middle east country, IPL teams and sports channels are changing their predictions and strategies of what might happen in this year’s edition of the IPL.

In this blog post, I want to talk about some of the reasons why UAE was chosen for this year’s IPL and some of the history that they have between each other in the past years.

What’s The History Between IPL & UAE?

The IPL that was supposed to begin in the month of April was postponed at the last minute due to the spread of the coronavirus in India. Along with the IPL, the T20 Cricket World Cup that was supposed to happen in Australia was also postponed due to the same issue.

BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) has been hosting the IPL ever since 2008. The first 20 matches of the 2014 IPL was held in UAE due to some disruptions from the Lok Sabha elections in India.

IPL matches were held in 3 stadiums of UAE cities: Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah. I previously stated in another blog (Why Australia Might Not Host The T20 World Cup?) about how IPL has set their dates from around September to November. Exact dates has been released from September 26th to November 7th. There are chances that IPL might start a week earlier on September 19th.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has decided to hold a full IPL Edition of 60 matches.ย The first IPL match has been set between the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) vs. Mumbai Indians (MI). As of fans watching at the stadium, BCCI has stated that the decision to allow fans to watch the matches live will be made in consultation with the UAE’s cricket board.

Why is IPL Being Moved To UAE?

Now that India seems to be in a critical position with the coronavirus, hosting it in that country didn’t seem to be a valuable option. Having experience of successfully hosting IPL matches in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah, BCCI suggested that this year’s tournament could be held in that country as well.

Why UAE…u might ask? Why not any other country?

Recently, UAE became one of the first countries to open up for tourism amongst these dark times of the coronavirus pandemic. They are taking several measures to keep the virus numbers to a minimum.

UAE is making sure to only fill 80% of the planes for social distancing. Hotels are making sure that they sanitize all hotel rooms after it’s being used. Tourist spots have made sure that they have put facilities in place for 6-feet distancing.

Although UAE has about 58,249 coronavirus cases, the country has an amazing recovery rate of about 51,235 people and only 343 deaths. Just these statistics depict how this small country has managed to offer successful treatment to all their coronavirus patients.

Although things look confirmed, BCCI still has to get the UAE government’s permission for hosting the 2020 IPL. If things go well this time around, we might get a chance to watch our favorite cricket tournament on screen!

If you have any questions/thoughts about hosting IPL 2020 in UAE or if you just had something to say, feel free to leave them down in the comment section below and I will get back to you ASAP.

Peace Out!!!
