The first wave of locusts hit East Africa in the end of January of this year. Although the damage was huge, the news didn’t become widespread as the coronavirus began to spread outside of China. Now….these locusts are back once again for a second wave where they have hit East Africa once again and have traveled up to Pakistan and on their way to India. Read more to learn about these locusts attacks and the effects that they have had before and might in the future.
What Has The Locusts Attacked Until Yesterday?
Reports have stated that the current locusts attacks are one of the most dangerous attacks that the world has seen in the last 30 years. As I stated, they initially started in East Africa and have destroyed Kenya, Somalia, Ethiopia, southern Iran where they are now invading Pakistan and India. They have left nothing behind other than complete destruction of farm fields.

What Has The United Nations Done So Far?
Acknowledging the fact that these locusts are the most dangerous pests in the world, The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization have demanded funding of about $75 million. Now that the world is too focused on the coronavirus and is in full force of stopping it’s vigorous spread, the United Nation’s plead wasn’t enough to gather this funding on time. As a result, they couldn’t deliver the necessary supplies and pesticides on time to those countries who were on the verge of being affected.
Locusts are known to kill crops in a very short period of time where these insects are capable of traveling 140 km every day. With this speed and destruction, these pests are affecting agricultural production on a global level along with causing food shortages. There has been reports that many African countries are on a critical shortage where food has been delivered to many people by airdrop.
What’s The Situation In India?
As you can see from the image above, swarms of locusts are currently eating up farm fields in Pakistan. There has been signs of some swarms that entered some Indian states like Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Rajasthan, and Maharashtra since yesterday. The current wind direction on Earth is moving in the Eastern direction during this part of the season. Therefore, the wind is carrying the locusts into India where it has already began to destroy the city of Wardha, Katol and the Amravati district of Maharashtra as of yesterday.
Authorities are spraying chemicals on crops to protect them from these swarms of insects. Officials have stated that a chemical spraying operation is currently underway at the Jalaketa Bypass in Amravati district. Meanwhile, authorities have decided to clear the chemicals in the affected areas using a drone flying remote control. With the state of Maharashtra already severely affected by the coronavirus, the invasion of locusts has worried farmers.
Zooming out of Maharashtra, the locusts are a huge threat to the entire nation. During this season, Indian farmers have currently planted seeds for the next harvest. So, if the locusts stay for a very long time, Indian farmers could be in huge trouble. Also, if the locusts are capable of flying over the Indian Ocean, then southern states like Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu could also fall under the list in short notice.
