Once again, India is facing another situation where they are on the verge of banning TikTok in the country. From the very beginning of this app, the relationship between India and TikTok has been very fragile. The usage of abusive content in this app has raised so many questions and was the main cause for banning it the first time. Although the ban was repealed in the Madaras court, read more about a recent Social Media war that has erupted to a condition where Indians are rating 1 stars in order to degrade the app.
History of Tiktok
TikTok is a video-sharing app where people share lip-sync and other talent videos. This social media app was founded by a chinese company in 2012 and this currently ranks #1 of Entertainment in the App Store. When TikTok was launched in the App Store and Play Store in 2017, the app started to become very popular outside of China and spread to the United States along with other Asian countries. The app then reached many milestones where it became the most downloaded app in the US and was the first one to do so by a Chinese company. The app then went on to reach 1 billion downloads along with being most downloaded app on the App Store in both 2018 and 2019.
However, Uncle Ben stated that “with great power comes great responsibility.”
Unfortunately, TikTok has had some issues with privacy concerns and portraying abusive content in their app. A few months back, TikTok faced some security concerns as they were discovered to be pulling out users personal information like IP addresses, current location and more. Since TikTok is mainly targeted for the young generation, there has also been reports of cyberbullying and racism.
“YouTube” vs. “Tiktok”
You might wonder….why did TikTok ratings skydive from about 4.5 stars to an all-time low of 1.3 stars?
Well, TikTok has reported that about 43% of their new users are coming from India. Also, unlike other social media apps, TikTok is an app where users don’t have the choice to view videos of their choice. Recommendations are given depending upon the popularity of the video and not by the viewer’s taste. Even if some videos are very controversial, this would gain popularity in a negative manner and might have a higher chance of popping up on a user’s recommendation list. In this scenario, it’s one of these controversial videos that has brought a threat to India.
A Indian TikTok creator recently made a video of trolling North Indian YouTubers that TikTokers have a much bigger market compared to YouTubers and that they are overestimating their talent. As a response, a North Indian YouTuber responded to this TikTok video in a very offensive way where YouTube took out this video due to security concerns.
More than being offensive to TikTokers, this YouTuber indirectly spoke to many religious and ethnic groups like the LGBT community. When the video was removed from YouTube, this alarmed many huge North Indian YouTubers and their subscribers. In order to put down TikTok, they all grouped up together and began to give 1 star ratings on the TikTok app in order portray their hatred against that particular TikTok video.
