A Little Overview of Ramadan
Muslims are currently fasting in their holy month of Ramadan. According to the Islamic calendar, the ninth month corresponds to the month of Ramadan where muslims fast from sunrise to sunset. Then, they spend their nights in prayer and in remembrance of their god (Allah). At the end of the month, muslims take part in Eid al-Fitr, a holiday that is celebrated on the last day of Ramadan to mark the end of fasting. According to the Islamic calendar, a day is recorded from one sunset to the next sunset. Therefore, Eid in India this year begins from the evening of May 23rd to the evening of May 24th.
Muslims around the world have been dissolved in great confusion as the lockdown forced them to stay inside. This quarantine has brought up many questions about fulfilling the congregational night prayers, Jummah prayers (held every friday), and the Eid prayer which will come up in few days. Places of worship has been closed around the world where famous scholars around the world have been guiding the people using the Quran during these pandemic times.
Eid Prayer Issue in Tamil Nadu
A case has been filed at the ICT (Information and Communication Technology) branch seeking permission to hold the Eid Prayer in Tamil Nadu schools. The petition filed was by Sakul Hameed from Villapuram of Madurai. All parties are cooperating with the government’s action to prevent the spread of coronavirus. Although places of worship has been closed, some people still go against the curfew rules and go to mosques for prayer. Some relaxations has been provided in orange and green zones where the police force has been strictly controlling the holy places in red zones.
Despite the pandemic, muslims are now at the end of Ramadan where they have been perform their 5 daily prayers at home in the present environment along with fasting during this month. The petition that was filed in Madurai stated that it is the duty of the Madurai District to respect the Islamic religion and conduct the Eid prayer in school and/or open grounds. Therefore, all the students in the Madurai district should be ordered to follow the social deviation on that day from 9 am to 11 pm. The petition comes up for hearing today in the session of Justices PN Prakash and P. Pugazhendi.
