Coronavirus: Special Training For Dogs To Detect Coronavirus In Humans

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has been adding more and more coronavirus symptoms to the list and there are many cases where people have the virus without showing any symptoms. This is making testing very hard as people are carrying the virus unknowingly which spreads it even further. Along with checking temperature, sanitizing yourselves, and home isolation, continue reading on how a special training program has been launched in order to detect the coronavirus by the use of dogs.

The United Kingdom has been launched a £500,000 (4,59,19,622 Rupees) special program in order to detect the presence of the coronavirus in the human body by a certain breed of dogs. For the past few months, the race for the coronavirus vaccine has been intensifying among certain countries as they spend day and night to find a cure. In this case, researchers in the UK are working on whether a dog is capable of detecting the coronavirus that has been transmitted from one human to another.

London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (a public university with the finest education and research for global health) have partnered with Durham University to compile some researchers to work on this special program. These researchers have begun their first test with dogs diagnosed with the disease. The first study will examine whether dogs can detect coronavirus infection in humans through odor samples.

Health staff at London hospitals are collecting perfume samples taken from people with the coronary artery disease and also those who are not infected with the virus. Then, these medical staff provide these samples to these researchers who uses them to train their selected dogs so that they could sense the odor of the coronavirus.

This special program’s lead researcher, Prof. James Logan, head of the department of disease control at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, stated:

“This, combined with the knowledge that respiratory disease can change body odour, makes us hopeful that the dogs can also detect Covid-19. If successful, this approach could revolutionise how we detect the virus, with the potential to screen high numbers of people.”
